Alabama football recruiting: Tide rolls to No. 1 in the rankings after four-star TE Ty Lockwood commits

Alabama has jumped on the recruiting trail in recent weeks, nabbing several top-notch prospects who have helped the Crimson Tide climb the team rankings for the 2023 cycle. move to No. 2 on Monday with the commitment of four-star defensive lineman Hunter Osborne, Alabama took control of No. 1 in the 247Sports 2023 team rankings – supplanting Notre Dame from the top spot – with the promise of tight end Top247 Ty Lockwood Tuesday.

Lockwood is a tight 9th-ranked four-star prospect for the Class of 2023. A former Ohio State draftee, Lockwood traveled to Tuscaloosa last week and, after receiving his scholarship offer in person, decided to become the 18th inductee in the Alabama class.

“I had a chance to sit in this cramped room and meet the coaches and watch a practice and see how they run things,” Lockwood told 247Sports. “The vibe that I had and the ability to connect with the coach like I did and the players like I did, you have that instinctive feeling when something is going well. That’s exactly what I felt. I went there, the atmosphere was amazing. That’s all you can ask for, Bama.”

247Sports scouting analyst Cooper Petagna writes that Lockwood “shows excellent versatility as a receiver” and projects himself as a high-profile, multi-year starter with all-conference potential.

Plays with good speed and suddenness as a road runner. Moves efficiently, quickly in and out of breaks. Demonstrates good route rhythm, understands leverage and how to separate at the top of the route. Has above average game speed and offers some run-after-catch ability. Natural pass catcher with the ability to be a factor in the short to middle end of the field. Has an excellent playing temperament for the position, understands how to play the game with instinct and awareness.

Of the Alabama class’ 18 commitments, 15 are four-star (11) or five-star (4) prospects, and eight of those top-notch recruits have committed to the Crimson Tide since early July. That provided the engine for a rapid rise in the recruiting rankings over the past month, capped by Lockwood’s commitment to help Alabama take control of No. 1 on Tuesday.

Still, Alabama isn’t done with its efforts in the 2023 cycle, and neither are the other competitors. Notre Dame, Ohio State, Georgia, Texas and others will continue to fill their 2023 classes with top talent, but when a recruiting powerhouse like Nick Saban’s Alabama program takes the place of No. 1 with as much top-notch talent as the tide has assembled, he sets the bar high to secure the top class in the cycle.
