Rivers State Governor Chief Nyesom Wike has accused some elders of ganging up on him because they failed to pass the primary to be the gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). ) in the state.
The Governor explained that some of them on his birthday in 2021 who showed interest in stealing the ticket but failed in their attempt to squeeze it are now in Abuja plotting against him.
Wike spoke last Monday at the 74th birthday reception held in honor of former Rivers State Governor Dr. Peter Odili at the private residence built and donated by the Government of state in the former government residential area, Port Harcourt.
The Governor said these elders came to him on their own accord and showed that they would stay to see what they had come to convince him of.
“On my last birthday, at midnight, some of our elders called me to tell me that they wanted to see me. They came to see me and told me that they had come to wish me a happy birthday.
“Then they presented me with a letter stating that I should run for the presidency. All of them, including Dr. Abiye (Sekibo), signed the document.
“I say okay, you too should go and give me someone who will be governor after me. They were all sitting there looking left and right.
“I asked them, those of you who are interested in being Governor should raise your hands. Everyone raised their hands. One person did not raise their hands, Senator Bari Mpigi. I asked why he wasn’t interested, he replied, sir, let me hold what God gave me. I don’t want to lose both.
Wike noted that the alumni also signed a document that they would respect whatever comes out of the gubernatorial primary.
But the governor expressed regret that since they were unsuccessful they have now turned around to allege he was pursuing a bid for a third term.
“Some people don’t know the story. They will tell all kinds of stories. But the truth is this; all (the elders) have signed the document prepared by OCJ Okocha that whoever I bring, they will respect it.
“But now they have gone to Abuja so that I am not vice-president. I also read, yesterday, when I was in Paris, one of them saying that I told him that if they did to me what they had done to Doctor Pierre Odili; that I will collapse the system.
“I am not an ungrateful person; and I will never be ungrateful in my life. What is important is that I did well as governor. I am happy and I leave my functions a happy man.
The Governor of Rivers State recalled that when Dr Peter Odili was due to run for President, he had a large crowd following him, happily.
He noted that when the question of governorship of Rivers State had to be decided and he did not give to those who wanted it, they all left him, ran to Abuja to thwart his ambition presidential.
Wike, however, said he clung to the former governor’s advice, so he was not surprised with the turn of events and the outcome of the PDP’s presidential primary.
He described Dr. Peter Odili as a true leader of men who has trained many people and supported many people in the light of political lamps especially in Rivers State and across the country.
“There was a time when all political classes abandoned Odili. He is a man who gave us everything. Some people called him ‘Mr. Donat’. There was no abuse that he didn’t have. Everyone he tried to help their families, at the end of the day, all of them betrayed him.
“For us, we’ve used it as a school, and we thank him for making himself available for us to use for learning so that we won’t be shocked at what’s to come.”
Wike expressed his joy to have known Odili and to be able to celebrate him.
He pointed to the many supports and political tutelage gains under Odili that enabled him to accomplish his political successes.
